Top Anime Picks of 2005

Straightforward, what series do I recommend for Anime fans out there this year (as possible stocking stuffers for the Christmas holiday). Alphabetical order.

Avenger (BANDAI)
While I have yet to review it I'm going to take it that there's something worth checking out here. From the people who brought you (dot)hack//SIGN comes a sci-fi series set on Mars which looks promising (sorry, it's not an Anime based on the old BBC spy series or the MARVEL comic super hero group). Add to that the fact you can get the entire series in one fashionably cool collector's tin (with four free mini cells) and you might have something for the sci-fi fans! Review coming soon, by the way, so be sure to check that out when I put it up.

Azumanga Daioh (ADVFilms)
Because the exploits of Miss Yukari's English class never gets old, the series that has been compared to Seinfeld in it's brillance is something for the fan of a good comedy, now available in a complete collection set collect all 26 episodes in one easy to purchase box set.

Big O (BANDAI)
Still one of my favorite BANDAI series, the Big O, part Batman part James Bond and part giant robot series is still a recommended one from me to you. Yes, some people were not pleased with the way the series ended, but it's still recommended and worth checking out (now available in two collected sets last time I checked, though they may have finally combined both sets into one set... wonder if they'll do that).

Chrono Crusade (ADVFilms)
I haven't had the chance to watch the Anime yet, but if it's as good as the manga (ADVManga) that I rave about quite abit in past reviews, then I think it's safe to say that I'm going to be recommending this to you. Of course you should rent it before you buy it... you know, just in case. After all I also happen to like Princess Tutu the manga and yet I would never recommend the disappointing Anime version to anyone under any circumstances... hopefully this won't be a repeat of that but just in case...

Cowboy Bebop Remix (BANDAI)
Have you seen the series yet? Watched it yet on Cartoon Network (Adult Swim)? Saw the movie? Wondering what all the hype is about this series? Why wonder, when you can experience it yourself with the newly re-released Remix series (now in 5.1 digital) which should make for a fine gift for new fans or fans who may have missed the DVD release when it original came out sometime ago.

Galaxy Angel (BANDAI)
Up to Season 3 now, with Season 4 coming soon, this sci-fi comedy is just plain good with lots of laughs and lots of great writing. With a cast of lovable characters, improbable situations, parodies left and right as well as just great stories, this is one of those series that is just so right (4 seasons and hopefully counting can't be wrong)! Recommended for someone who'd like a little bite in their sci-fi series.

Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Complex (BANDAI)
The TV Series based on one of the most recognized works of Masamune Shirow, it continues where the original movie leaves off and takes the story in a new direction. Now presently up to Season 2 with a 3rd season rumored to be in development, it's recommended for both fans of Shirow and fans of good sci fi action series.

His and Her Circumstances (RightStuf International)
One of the few series put out by RightStuf, this series is one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in sometime. Put a egotistal perfectionist together with a seemingly "perfect" "rival" and watch as unlikely love blooms and grows between them. Though I was abit critical of some of the glitchy glitchy glitches on the DVDs (hopefully RightStuf fixed those if they ever put out a collected set of this series), and the series "died" before it's time because the series animators and the series creator couldn't see eye to eye, I still recommend it as worth your time to check out.

Hoop Days (BANDAI)
While I am not the biggest fan of sports related items I do like this series, and recommend it to fans of either high school level basketball or well written dramas.

Planetes (BANDAI)
The sci-fi series that is down to Earth and solidly written, with fans of both the Anime and Manga (TOKYOPOP) raving about it? You can't go wrong here. In a time where the most dangerous thing to the ever growing industry of space exploration is space debris it's up to a special breed of men and women to keep Earth's orbit clean of debris several years after a collision incident that killed innocent people (which highlighted the danger of orbital space debris). A fine series, one worth checking out if you haven't done so yet.

As for the coming new year? I don't much about what may come in the new year but I do have a few favorites I'm looking forward to, and recommend.

Aria (ADVFilms)
I raved about the manga, said it was a little treasure of a manga worth owning, but will I feel the same about the Anime once it comes out? Coming out on Japanese TV this past summer, Aria (the anime) hopefully holds true to the series and continues the wonderful story begun there. We can but hope this is the case as the series nears it's port over to this side of the world for English viewers.

Galaxy Angel Season 4 (BANDAI)
I liked the series to date, so I'm sure it'll stay status quo as I look forward to reviewing the 4th season of the mega hot series.
